Compositions containing landscapes and figures, referencing a range of artists from Hieronymus Bosch to Charles Burchfield, Max Ernst, Caspar David Friedrich, Ernst Haeckel and Victorian fairy painters Richard Doyle and Joseph Noel Paton.

Hieronymus Night’s Dream / details

Hieronymus Night’s Dream / 2012 / graphite on paper, triptych / 30” x 18”

Magnetic Fields / 2012 / graphite on four gessoed masonite panels / 18” x 18”

Waterfall / 2014 / graphite, acrylic paint, stainless steel and silk yarn, rouge on paper / 30” x 22”

These compositions developed intuitively, like moving through a landscape, exploring, discovering things and instinctually making choices for directions to take based on what has already been experienced. Using specific locations, yet striving for the actual feeling of a place through a melding of images that suggest the sounds and the ephemeral atmospherics experienced in the natural environment.

"Waterfall" is a collaboration with Laura Cooper.

Oasis / 2015 / graphite on paper / 22” x 30”

Sublunar: Listening to the Landscape / 2014 / graphite on paper / 22” x 30”

These drawings meld specific observations of natural forms – clouds, waterfalls, human viscera - that are recognizable in certain areas yet slip into abstraction. The visual passages of pencil marks create serpentine shapes contrasting with the negative space of the paper. These shapes become the composition of the drawing pulling the imagery further from its original meaning.
